The word Giclée (pronounced “zhee-clay”) comes from the French gicler (“to spray”) and was coined in the early 1990s by the late Jack Duganne (1942–2020), a pioneering Master Printer in this printing technique.

The term refers to inkjet prints that use mineral pigments and high-quality substrates, ensuring exceptional permanence. While every giclée print is inkjet, very few inkjet prints meet true giclée standards.

Laboratory studies indicate over 200 years of resistance to fading under ideal conditions (dark storage, 22.7 °C, 50% RH) and approximately 86 years when displayed under glass. With ongoing advances in ink technology, these timeframes are expected to become even more impressive.

Giclée (or Fine Art) printing allows artists to reproduce their work with fidelity, without resorting to mass industrial production that is impersonal and lacks long-term durability characteristics.
