Margin
We strongly recommend including a white margin (even a small one) when ordering prints of your pieces.
Why is the margin important
The presence of a margin is not merely “decorative”. It is also a practical choice that enhances the viewing experience and helps preserve the artwork:
- Safer handling: reduces the risk of touching the printed area and transferring oils to the surface.
- Greater longevity: less direct contact with the printed area means less wear over time.
- Easier framing: provides working margin for the framer and helps prevent marks on the edges.
- Signature and numbering: creates space for signing, numbering, and including edition information without interfering with the image.
- Edge protection: acts as a protective buffer in case of minor marks, handling, or natural wear along the edges.

Recommended minimum margins (practical guidance)
These are the recommended minimum margins for most works:
- Smaller than A4: 3–5 mm
- A4: 5–10 mm
- A3: Minimum 10 mm
- A2 and bigger: 10–15 mm
If your work will be handled frequently (signing, fairs, shipping to clients, proofs), it is worth aiming for the upper end of these margin ranges.
Can I print without a margin?
Yes. You may choose any margin you wish or even order without a margin.
The only important note is that the margin affects the final cost, as it increases the amount of paper used.
Please note that the margin recommendations mentioned above are intended as guidelines, not strict rules. If you prefer borderless prints, that is of course absolutely possible.
Pigmento prints are fully customizable and available in any size or proportion – whether standard or unconventional – and can be produced with or without margins. Your preferences guide our approach, and we’re committed to delivering prints that align precisely with your artistic vision.
